International Organisations
  • The United Nations Environment Programme works to encourage sustainable development through sound environmental practices everywhere. Its activities cover a wide range of issues, from atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems, the promotion of environmental science and information, to an early warning and emergency response capacity to deal with environmental disasters and emergencies.
  • The European Environment Directorate-General initiates and defines new environmental legislation and ensures that measures, which have been agreed, are actually put into practice in the Member States. The Environment DG is based largely in Brussels and has around 550 staff.
  • The Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change supports cooperative action by States to combat climate change and its impacts on humanity and ecosystems.
  • The United Nations Conferencde on Trade and Development is the principal organ of the United Nations General Assembly dealing with trade, investment and development issues. Its main goals are to maximise the trade, investment and development opportunities of developing countries and assist them in their efforts to integrate into the world economy on an equitable basis.
  • The World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg 26 August - 4 September, 2002, brought together tens of thousands of participants, including heads of State and Government, national delegates and leaders from NGOs , businesses and other major groups to focus the world's attention and direct action toward meeting difficult challenges, including improving people's lives and conserving our natural resources in a world that is growing in population, with ever-increasing demands for food, water, shelter, sanitation, energy, health services and economic security.
NGOs
  • The Sierra Club campaigns on Sprawl Solutions, Protecting Wildlands, Forests and Logging, Water and Factory Farm Pollution, Global Warming, Human Rights, Population Stabilization and Responsible Trade.
  • The World Wide Fund for Nature is one of the world's largest and most effective independent organizations dedicated to the conservation of nature. It has reached this status through a constant record of conservation achievements.
  • Greenpeace focuses on the the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's biodiversity and environment. It campaigns to stop climate change, protect ancient forests, save the oceans, stop whaling, say no to genetic engineering, stop the nuclear threat, eliminate toxic chemicals, and encourage sustainable trade.
  • Friends of the Earth International is a federation of autonomous environmental organizations from all over the world who campaign on the most urgent environmental and social issues, while simultaneously catalyzing a shift toward sustainable societies.
  • The Worldwatch Institute is a non profit public policy research organization dedicated to informing policymakers and the public about emerging global problems and trends and the complex links between the world economy and its environmental support systems.
  • The Rocky Mountain Institute is an entrepreneurial, nonprofit organization that fosters the efficient and restorative use of resources to create a more secure, prosperous, and life-sustaining world.
  • Practical Action was founded in 1966, as ITDG (the Intermediate Technology Development Group), by the radical economist Dr EF Schumacher to prove that his philosophy of 'Small is Beautiful' could bring real and sustainable improvements to people's lives.
UK Organisations
  • The Eco-Centre maintains a web site designed to speed the UK environmental professional through to the information, tools and resources they require in order to work effectively.
  • The Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) demonstrates and advocates the sustainable use of technology to reduce poverty in developing countries.
  • Greener by Design specialises in the development and promotion of sustainable product design concepts.
  • Holmes Environmental is an independent environmental consulting firm committed to supporting organisations in the achievement of their environmental performance and in the quest for sustainability.
  • The Centre for Sustainable Design facilitates discussion and research on eco-design and broader sustainability considerations in product and service development.
  • Friends of the Earth is one of the leading environmental pressure groups in the UK , and has a unique network of campaigning local groups, working in 250 communities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

  • The International Institute for Sustainable Development contributes to sustainable development by advancing policy recommendations on international trade and investment, economic policy, climate change, measurement and assessment, and natural resources management.
  • The World Business Council for Social Responsibility is a coalition of international companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development.
  • The Sustainable Development Communications Network is a group of leading civil society organizations seeking to accelerate the implementation of sustainable development through broader, integrated information and communications.
  • The Sustainable Development Gateway integrates the on-line information developed by members of the Sustainable Development Communications Network.
  • The Virtual Library contains a section on Sustainable Development that provides a comprehensive list of Internet sites dealing with sustainable development, including organisations, projects and activities, electronic journals, libraries, references and documents, databases, directories or metadatabases.
  • Sustainable Development International is a journal aimed at policy makers and technical and specifying executives in government and industry.
  • The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development contributes to a better understanding of development and environment concerns in the context of international trade. ICTSD is a provider of original, non-partisan reporting and facilitation services at the intersection of international trade and sustainable development.
  • The National Strategies for Sustainable Development web site provides tools to assist in promoting dialogues on national strategies for sustainable development and providing necessary background information and reference material in support of those dialogues.
  • Sustainable Development Online (SDO) provides access to significant web sites built by organisations supporting the move towards sustainable development. SDO is continually updated and maintained and each web site listed has been visited by one of their researchers. Information can be accessed via SDO on many interconnected subjects, ISO 14001 to organic farming, SME support schemes to renewable materials.
  • The Sustainability Reporting Program is Canada's first independent initiative to find out how we are doing at living in balance for the long term. The reporting system works from a definition of sustainability that sees human activities as part of - and dependent upon - the natural world.
